2015 Summer Workshop Descriptions
Alternative TI:ME 2A: Power-User Synthesis: From Scanning to Notation to Customized Creativity & More! (The Ultimate Technology Experience)
Ever wish that technology could change the way you prepare and teach and assess your students in a timely manner with significant implications on how well enough to improve their performance skills? Or help create customized differentiated-instruction to better define how well all of our students are regularly learning and progressing? But without a user-friendly assessment environment to accomplish this, such creativity will rarely even be attempted by teachers in the field. And, we teachers can be found in perilous circumstances as administrators evaluate us.
This article about this workshop at Power-User Synthesis: From Scanning to Notation to Customized Creativity & Beyond! (the ultimate technology experience) is a game-changer presenting a new innovation that goes beyond individual music software applications incorporating Power-User applications for bulls-eye differentiated-instruction. The secret to creating music projects with the Power-User concept is in converting files that can be used to transfer data across different software apps for enhanced instructional opportunities through MusicXML files.
There are three main components in the Power-User Synthesis process. The focus here is to explain the “power” and provide tips, tricks, and techniques for music scanning, notation software editing, and the implantation of SmartMusic practice files. Through this Power-User technique, music teachers can create assignments of the music that they are actually teaching/performing along with assessment recordings, note and rhythm accuracy, plus a unique way to improve intonation all resulting in dynamic interactiveness between teacher and students. This creates a first-class teaching environment that will improve performance techniques for an unlimited repertory that could never be duplicated with traditional, segmented instruction without tedious efforts of the teacher.

TI:ME 1A Technology: Electronic Instruments, MIDI Sequencing
The objective of Basic Skills in Music Technology is to impart practical skills and knowledge to in-service teachers to allow them to integrate technology effectively into teaching and learning. The course is divided into three sections - notation software, music production software, and the use of electronic musical instruments. The format of each section alternates presentations with class activities, many of which serve to assess
student progress. Satisfactory participation in class activities and the successful completion of several final projects are required for certification.
TI:ME 1B Skills: Software, Communications & Digital Media
Participants in this course will learn about a variety of digital media and technology-
assisted teaching and learning tools that can be used to support their music curricula. Participants will connect to and use instructional materials from the Internet. Students will also learn to author multimedia projects which include text, graphics, video, and sound in the digital domain. Participants’ progress will be assessed through completion
of class assignments, and, at the discretion of the instructor, assignments completed outside of class time.
TI:ME 2B - Internet Authoring
The objective of this course is to impart practical skills and knowledge to In-
Service Teachers (ISTs) to allow them to integrate Internet authoring effectively
into teaching and learning. The course covers the creation of Web sites
for the music classroom. ISTs who complete this course will create web sites that include lessons and resources appropriate for the K-12 music classroom. ISTs will incorporate digital media including text, graphics, video, sound, and music into their projects. Software to be used in the class will include a professional level
Web authoring program and software needed to edit media files. The format of course alternates presentations with class activities, many of which serve to assess student progress. Satisfactory participation in class activities and successful completion of final projects are required for certification. This course meets one
third of the coursework requirements for Level Two TI:ME Certification. Prerequisites for this course include completion of both TI:ME level 1 courses OR equivalent experience.
TI:ME 2C - Integration
This course will provide a venue for creating lesson plans and study units that can help integrate technology into the K-12 music curriculum. Participants should be familiar with most of the common applications of music technology including music notation software, MIDI sequencing, the Internet, and electronic keyboards.
Participants are encouraged to bring copies of their music curriculum and any other materials that may be helpful in creating lessons and activities using technology. The course will be taught in a hands-on environment. This course is designed for the teacher who has experience using technology as the goal is to apply the use of technology in the instructional setting. This course will not teach how to use software. Maximum of 1 person per computer station, maximum 16 students. This course fulfills 1/3 of the requirements for TI:ME Level Two certification. PREREQUISITE: TI:ME Level One certification or equivalent experience. |
